A Morehouse student must be an effective communicator whose abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening reflect his sustained intellectual preparation and his commitment to humanistic inquiry. Devoted to the teaching of writing across the disciplines, including research skills, literary and cultural criticism, creative writing, and journalism, the Department of English offers a comprehensive curriculum of traditional and contemporary course selections, with strong offerings in the African-American and Africana traditions. English majors gain an abiding appreciation of world literatures and cultures—textual, visual, and digital—and acquire the interdisciplinary and intercultural skills in critical thinking and writing necessary to succeed in advanced studies in the humanities and in all professional careers.
